Project Background

In 2021, the RDOS determined the outdoor ice rink was reaching its operational end of life due to deteriorating brine lines and would likely reach critical failure any year now. The RDOS is working with a consultant to evaluate arena replacement possibilities and costs and to explore options for potential enhancements and future development on-site.

The objectives of the Similkameen Recreation Centre outdoor arena replacement and conceptual design project are to elevate the user experience when using the outdoor arena, improve the multi-functional asset that can be used year-round, and meet the needs and expectations of a growing local community.

Public Engagement

The RDOS hosted an open house event to provide information and gather additional feedback on proposed plans for the Similkameen Recreation Centre’s outdoor arena replacement and conceptual design project.

The open house event took place on Thursday, February 29, 2024, between 2:30 and 6:30 pm at the Similkameen Recreation Centre, 311 - 9th St, Keremeos. The event provided an opportunity to discuss the future of the arena and share feedback on the proposed design concepts. If you were unable to attend the open house event, you’re invited to view the conceptual plans and provide feedback under the survey section below. Public feedback will be open on this page until Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Similkameen Recreation Landscape Plan

The RDOS conducted public engagement in 2021 to seek feedback on the Similkameen Recreation Landscape Plan. Picture boards were displayed at the Similkameen Recreation Centre and on RDOS Regional Connections from November 22, 2021, through December 15, 2021. Residents and visitors were invited to share their input on the designs and this feedback helped shape the final landscaping plan. The plan was developed through engagement with the Similkameen Recreation Commission (Electoral Areas "B", "G" and Village of Keremeos), local experts in landscape design, RDOS staff and Regional Directors.

The Similkameen Recreation Landscape Plan was created to provide a guide for future site development at the Similkameen Recreation Centre. The on-site features beyond the rink construction (plaza, bleachers, pool) have been included with reference to the concepts from the Landscape Plan.
